What Happened to the Wayne Dalton idrive?

History

Wayne Dalton has been manufacturing garage doors since 1954.  They are a leader in the garage door industry and have had some innovative products for their time. Their patented technology had features not present in any other garage door opener during that time. One of these products was the Wayne Dalton idrive released in 2002.

Wayne Dalton wanted to find out how to minimize potential issues with the current and traditional style of openers. Unlike traditional ceiling-mounted (Trolley) garage door openers, the Wayne Dalton idrive is mounted to the garage door header directly above the garage door. This wall-mounted design clears up space and eliminates noise associated with chain, screw, and belt drive openers utilizing a rail system.

The idrive opener was available in two models but has since been discontinued. The TorqueMaster version works with the Wayne Dalton TorqueMaster Spring systems and the Torsion idrive system works with most other residential garage doors utilizing a torsion spring system.

Idrive Features

Wayne Dalton’s engineering, innovations, and features have been integrated into the idrive openers. These openers have been awarded the Consumer Digest “Best Buy” Award and also, listed as a top 100 product in Building Products Magazine.

Features included:

  • A multi-function, Wireless Wall Button that can be mounted anywhere in your garage.
    • This wall button features a pet opening button, which opens the door to a preset position between 8” and 30“, allowing pets to enter and exit the garage door.
    • A 10-second delay button to close for an easy exit.
    • Light button to turn the light fixture on or off momentarily.
  • Security light that mounts into any outlet in the garage and is turned on by opening or closing the garage door or by activating the light by the wireless wall station.
  • Each unit comes with two 3-button transmitters that can operate up to six doors or devices and with its compact design it can be mounted to your visor or keychain.
  • Wireless Keypad to operate your garage door from outside by simply entering a digital code.
  • HomeLink compatible.
  • Electronic System Monitoring.  Automatically monitors for operating malfunctions, and alerts homeowners with a flashing light.
  • Rolling Code Technology.
  • Automatic Travel Limit feature. The system constantly measures for weather changes and floor level variations to be sure the garage door always has the best seal.  This prevents the need to adjust the door periodically.
  • Soft Start/Stop. This feature rarely found in other operators slowly starts and stops the garage door, greatly decreasing the wear and tear on the garage door.

The Classic Drive, ProDrive, DoorMaster, and Quantum Models were also openers that were manufactured by Wayne Dalton and are no longer available.

Wayne Dalton led the innovation and idea for wall-mount operators but ultimately failed to succeed in manufacturing operators. Now, Chamberlain Group and The Genie Company have since continued with creating wall-mounted operators such as the LiftMaster 8500, and the Overhead Door Infinity 2000.
