This is the genuine Overhead Door brake kit for RSX hoist operators running a 1/2 HP single-phase motor — and it is also the kit used to add a brake to a hoist unit that shipped from the factory without one.

Does this fit my door?

Overhead Door builds four different brake kits for the RSX and they are not interchangeable. This one, part number 111396.0004, is the hoist / single-phase / 1/2 HP kit for a NEMA 48 frame motor. Overhead Door's own kit description for this part number reads "BRAKE KIT, H, 1PH, 1/2HP" — the H stands for hoist.

• Mounting: hoist (H) models only. Side-mount, center-mount and trolley RSX units take a different brake.
• Motor: 1/2 HP, single phase, NEMA 48 frame.
• Retrofit or replacement: Overhead Door's instruction sheet for this service number covers both replacing a worn brake and adding a brake to a hoist unit that was not factory equipped with one. The kit ships with the hoist bracket assembly and release link needed for that retrofit.

How to confirm before you buy: find the data label on the operator housing and check that the model reads RSX, then note the horsepower and the phase. Next, read the motor's own nameplate for the frame size — this kit is for a 48 frame. If the operator couples to the door shaft with a hoist, you have a hoist unit; if it pulls a trolley along a rail, you do not.

This kit does not fit:

• 3-phase 1/2 HP hoist, or any 3/4–1 HP hoist — you need 111396.0005 (56 frame).
• RSX side-mount or rolling-steel with a 1/2 HP single-phase motor — you need 111396.0001.
• RSX side-mount or rolling-steel with any other motor — you need 111396.0002.
• RHX heavy-duty operators — you need 111857.0001 or 111861.0001.
• RMX operators — you need brake band kit 110956.0001.

Installation Notes

Work from Overhead Door's installation instructions, P/N 111416.0003. They cover both first-time installation on a hoist unit with no factory brake and straight replacement of a worn brake. The brake mounts to the motor face, which is why the procedure and the parts differ between the 48 frame and 56 frame kits — confirm your frame size before you start. The kit includes a 1cc grease packet; use it where the instructions call for it and not elsewhere.

Warning: Disconnect and lock out power at the breaker before you touch the operator. The brake is what holds the door in position. With the brake removed or released, a door that is out of balance can fall. Secure the door in the closed position before you begin, and do not rely on the operator or the old brake to hold it while you work.

Warning: A commercial door brake is a safety device. If the door will not hold position after the brake is installed, take the door out of service and have it inspected by a qualified commercial door technician before putting it back into use.
