How to Program a Universal Garage Door Remote: 5-Minute Setup for Chamberlain, Genie & Overhead Door

To program a universal garage door remote, the exact sequence depends on which universal remote you own and which brand of opener you are pairing it to. Below are the full, manufacturer-accurate steps for our two current universal remotes, the LiftMaster L992U and the Overhead Door OU4RTR2-P, plus a brand-by-brand reference so you get it right on the first try. Neither remote works with openers manufactured before 1993 or with openers that lack working photo safety sensors near the bottom of the track.

What you will need

  • A compatible universal remote: the 2-button LiftMaster L992U or the 4-button Overhead Door OU4RTR2-P
  • A step stool or ladder tall enough to reach the motor unit mounted on the ceiling
  • 5 minutes of clear space under the door, since the door may move during programming

Programming the LiftMaster L992U (2-Button)

The L992U is compatible with LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Craftsman openers from 1993 to present, Genie and Overhead Door from 1995 to present, Linear from 1997 to present, Stanley (1998), Wayne Dalton (1999), Raynor from 1993 to present, and Performax, Xtreme Garage, Sommer, and Ryobi from 2013 or 2016 to present, along with Guardian, Do-It, Garage Master, Master Mechanic, Moore-O-Matic, and True Value branded openers.

Step 1: Put the remote into pairing mode

Press and hold both buttons on the L992U at the same time until the blue LED stays on solid, typically within 6 seconds.

Step 2: Follow the path for your opener's Learn button

Path A: LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman, or Raynor with a purple, orange, red, or green Learn button.

  1. Press and immediately release the Learn button on the opener (check under the light lens cover if you do not see it right away).
  2. Within 15 seconds, press and release the remote button you want to program 3 times. The blue LED will flash intermittently.
  3. The garage door will move. Within 3 seconds of it moving, press and release any remote button once more to finish.

Path B: LiftMaster, Chamberlain, or Craftsman with a white or yellow Learn button. These openers give you three programming options: the myQ app (Chamberlain's recommended method, since it also unlocks remote naming and access history), the opener's Learn button, or the opener's control panel. To use the Learn button:

  1. Press and immediately release the Learn button on the opener. Its LED will illuminate.
  2. Within 30 seconds, press and hold the remote button you want to program. Release it once the opener's light flashes and/or you hear two clicks, usually within 5 seconds.

Unlike Path A, the door does not move during this method, which makes it useful if you would rather not watch the door cycle to confirm programming.

Path C: Genie, Wayne Dalton, Linear, Guardian, Xtreme Garage, Performax, Sommer, or Stanley. These brands use a Program or Learn button located on the motor unit or its circuit board rather than a colored button on a control panel.

  1. With the remote already in pairing mode from Step 1, locate and activate your opener's programming mode (the button is labeled Program Set on Genie, Program SW on Wayne Dalton, and Learn on Linear, Sommer, Stanley, Guardian, Xtreme Garage, and Performax).
  2. Within 15 seconds, press and release the remote button you want to program 3 times. The blue LED will flash intermittently.
  3. The door may move. If it does, press and release any remote button within 3 seconds to finish.

To test: press the button you programmed. If the opener does not respond, wait for its Learn button LED to fully turn off (this can take up to 3 minutes on yellow or white Learn button openers) before repeating the steps.

Programming the Overhead Door OU4RTR2-P (4-Button Remote)

The OU4RTR2-P has 4 buttons, and each one can be programmed independently to a different opener, gate receiver, or commercial door, so a single remote can run up to 4 separate devices. It is compatible with Genie and Overhead Door (Intellicode and CodeDodger, both generation I and II), Chamberlain, LiftMaster, and Craftsman (all four Learn button colors), Sommer, Linear, Wayne Dalton, Ryobi, Guardian, Xtreme brand, FAAC, and Marantec. Older dip switch systems need a different process, covered below.

Step 1: Find your opener's ID number

Look up your opener's brand and specification in the compatibility table below. Next to it is an ID number, which tells you how many times to press the remote button in Step 3.

Step 2: Put the remote into pairing mode

On the remote, press and hold button 2. While still holding button 2, press button 4 four times, then release both buttons. The remote's LED begins flashing to show it is ready to learn a new code.

Step 3: Assign the code to a remote button

Press the remote button you want to use (1, 2, 3, or 4) the number of times listed for your opener's ID number, then stop and wait. The LED keeps flashing for about 15 seconds and then turns off.

Step 4: Put the opener into programming mode

On the garage door opener, press and hold the Learn or Program button for 2 to 3 seconds, then release it.

Step 5: Sync the remote to the opener

Press and release the remote button you just assigned once every 2 seconds until the garage door opener responds. Test the button. Programming is complete.

Special case: Chamberlain, LiftMaster, or Craftsman with a yellow Learn button (ID 4). These openers expect the remote to check in twice, so the sequence is different from every other brand on the chart:

  1. Press and hold button 2, then while still holding it, press button 4 four times, and release both buttons. The blue LED begins flashing.
  2. Press the remote button you are programming 4 times, then wait about 15 seconds for the blue LED to stop flashing and go out.
  3. Press and hold that same remote button. After about 5 seconds the white LED will blink; release the button. If you previously had to manually switch this opener to 390 MHz because of interference, hold the button for 10 seconds instead, until the white LED blinks a second time and all LEDs go out.
  4. On the opener, press and hold the Learn or Program button for 2 to 3 seconds, then release. The opener will click.
  5. On the remote, press the same button one time. The opener clicks again.
  6. On the opener, press and hold the Learn or Program button for 2 to 3 seconds one more time, then release.
  7. On the remote, press the same button one more time. Test the button. Programming is complete.

Marantec and dip switch openers. Older Chamberlain, Overhead Door, and Genie units from before 1995, along with Stanley openers and all Marantec models, use physical dip switches or a Teach & Pair process instead of the Learn method above, and require an existing working remote to complete. Consult your opener's manual for the dip switch settings, or contact Overhead Door customer care for the alternate instructions.

Clearing the OU4RTR2-P

To erase what is programmed and start over, press and hold button 3, then while still holding it, press button 4 four times, and release both buttons. The LED flashes once and goes out. If that does not clear it, reset the programming at the opener itself (consult its manual), which clears every remote and keypad currently programmed to that unit.

Common mistakes that stop a remote from programming

  • Skipping the remote's own pairing mode. Most failed attempts happen because someone goes straight to the opener's Learn button without first holding the two (or button 2 and button 4) buttons on the universal remote to put it into pairing mode.
  • Holding the opener's Learn button too long. On Chamberlain, LiftMaster, and Craftsman openers, holding the Learn button beyond the specified 2 to 3 seconds (or past a quick press and release, depending on the color) can erase every remote already programmed to that opener, not just add a new one.
  • Missing the timing window. If the 15-second or 30-second LED countdown runs out before you press the remote button, the opener drops out of programming mode and you have to start over.
  • Using the wrong ID number on the OU4RTR2-P. Pressing the remote button the wrong number of times in Step 3 assigns the wrong code table, and the opener will not learn it even though every other step was done correctly.
  • Trying this on a pre-1993 opener. Neither remote is compatible with openers manufactured before 1993, and both require the opener's photoelectric safety sensors to be present and working.
  • A weak battery. A dim or non-flashing LED during programming usually means the CR2032 coin cell needs to be replaced before you try again.

Frequently asked questions

Will a universal remote work on any garage door opener?

Only openers manufactured in 1993 or later that have working photoelectric safety sensors near the bottom of the door track. Older openers predate the Learn button system these remotes rely on and need a different type of remote entirely.

How many doors or gates can one universal remote control?

The L992U's two buttons and the OU4RTR2-P's four buttons can each be programmed independently, so a single remote can control up to 2 or 4 separate garage doors, gates, or commercial door operators.

Why won't my opener respond after I finished programming?

The most common causes are missing the 15 or 30 second timing window, waiting too long between the check-in steps on a yellow Learn button opener, or a weak remote battery. Wait for the opener's Learn LED to fully turn off (up to 3 minutes on yellow or white Learn button models) and repeat the steps from the beginning.

Can I erase a universal remote and reprogram it for a different door?

Yes. On the OU4RTR2-P, use the clearing steps above, or simply reassign that button by repeating the programming sequence with a new ID number. On the L992U, repeating the programming steps for a new opener overwrites the old code on that button.

What if my opener uses dip switches instead of a Learn button?

Older Chamberlain, Overhead Door, Stanley, and Genie units (generally pre-1995) use physical dip switches rather than a Learn button, and Marantec openers use a fixed learn code. The OU4RTR2-P needs the Teach & Pair method for these, which requires an existing working remote and is not covered by the Learn method steps above.

Do I need to reprogram my remote if I replace the battery?

No. The programming is stored in the remote's memory chip and in the opener's memory, not in the battery itself. A battery swap does not erase it.
